Making the Coalition's Case As Clear As Glass

I recently had the opportunity to accompany David Walker, the chairman of the Coalition’s board of directors, to the 2011 GlassBuild America convention in Atlanta GA. I knew very little about what these fine folks do, but I read a bit about the convention online and was aware that I'd be meeting business owners for door and window companies. What I didn't know, however, was how gracious they would be, and how even during a slowdown of the economy, when some are struggling to make the next mortgage payment, they still stepped up to help provide a major component for construction of a wounded warrior’s home. They actually gave 80 windows that were specifically made of sound-deadening components – perfect for a soldier struggling to live with PTSD.

I was warmly welcomed to a luncheon event at the convention, and given the chance to showcase what the Coalition does for our wounded soldiers. I want everyone who came to the luncheon to know that I had a great time speaking to, and with, them and look forward to the next occasion to share our message and raise awareness about our organization.

Loaded for Bear in Maine's North Woods

(Editor’s Note: The Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes recently helped sponsor several wounded veterans who went on a bear-hunting trip in Maine. The following is an account of the expedition written by Tony Covell, one of the CSAH’s national spokesmen, who lives near Traverse City, MI.)

At the Coalition’s Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute in December 2010, I met Bob Duhadaway, who has been a long-time supporter of the group and is a passionate game hunter. He told me he wanted to take some injured service members on a bear hunt, and asked me to bring along another veteran. My first call was to John Case, who I knew from my time in Iraq. John has a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and suffers from a serious case of PTSD – so bad, in fact, that he had not left Logan County in southern Ohio, where he lives, for six years. Although he was a little hesitant at first about being so far away from home, he ultimately accepted the invitation.

Bob, meanwhile, had lined up two Marines from Virginia to join us – Brad Garfield, who was an explosive ordinance disposal technician injured in Iraq while trying to disarm an IED, and James Gill, who was with an infantry unit and lost a leg and an eye during a cordon and search. Emails were exchanged and the date was set for the end of August. Bob was kind enough to donate the hunts and agree to have trophies mounted of any bears we took, while the Coalition was very generous to cover our travel expenses.

As the time for the hunt drew closer, excitement was in the air, as well as a bit of apprehension as Hurricane Irene decided to make her debut up the East Coast. Although flying to Maine was never an option – given that we were headed to the tiny town of Stockholm, less than 15 miles from the Canadian border, and planning to transport bear meat on the way back – this storm still complicated our plans. On the day I was to leave my home, we decided that instead of us all meeting in Virginia, I would drive just to Ohio to pick up John and then turn north to avoid the hurricane. James and Brad, meanwhile, would travel a day behind, once the storm has passed.

After three days on the road, I finally arrived in Maine and as soon as everyone was settled in, we discussed where we would be hunting. John and I had decided to hunt with muzzleloaders, while James would be using a bow and Brad, a .308-caliber rifle. For me, the first outing came and went with the only action being a couple of birds and squirrels that played in the trees in front of my blind. James, however, had better luck as he took a shot at a bear just before dark. Upon first light the next day, we hit the woods to search for the presumably wounded bear, but unfortunately the only thing we found was mosquitoes. That evening, however, proved to be great for almost everybody as John, James and Brad all took nice bears. I even had a little more action in front of me – two raccoons that came to play.

We spent the early part of our third day fishing off the docks in front of our cabin until I had to head for the woods. Gary Sweeney, our head guide, decided to move me to another blind, but by the end of the day, I was wishing I was back in my original one where I could at least watch the raccoons. Finally my luck turned on our fourth day. John accompanied me to the blind, thinking he would videotape the hunt for me on my camera, and that maybe a little extra “mojo” wouldn’t hurt either. Gary dropped us off around 3 p.m. and by 3:40 we had a bear at the bait. As I took aim, John prepared the camera and said, “Just tell me when you are going to shoot,” to which my only response was “Now.” I fired my .50-caliber muzzleloader and the beast dropped in its tracks. After some high-fiving, we called Gary to pick us up and head back to watch the video. Only during the return ride to camp did John tell me from the rear seat of Gary’s pick-up, “Man, I’m sorry I didn’t get the button pushed to record the shot.” Naturally, the rest of the night was spent with everybody playfully picking on him.

An Emotional Return to Iraq

Donny Daughenbaugh, one of the national spokesmen for the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, was recently among eight veterans invited by the Troops First Foundation to spend a week back in Iraq, where he was seriously wounded in 2004. He wrote this blog entry upon his return.)

I was nervous to take those first steps off that C-130. The last time I was in Iraq, the result was not what I envisioned. I was shot in the face, just south of Baghdad, and blacked out for a minute afterwards, When I regained consciousness, I saw a large puddle of blood – MY blood. I had visions of what others would say to my wife when I didn't make it home. That experience subsequently led to years of recovery.

This day was different, though. As I stepped off that bird at Camp Liberty – part of the BIAP compound at Baghdad International Airport – we were greeted by an Air Force band playing music and inviting the eight of us back into this country where we nearly lost our lives. We were then welcomed into a palace with several hundred troops in attendance. They all wanted to hear what we had to say and, deep down, they wanted to know why in the world we would come back here.

When it was my time to take the microphone and address the huge crowd, I told them that it was hard to step off that plane, but that as a result of their dedication to their mission and their vision of a free Iraq, I felt safe. I also told them, "When I was here on deployment, just like all of you, I couldn't wait to leave. However the way I made that exit wasn't right, and from the very first minutes I was hospitalized in Baghdad, I wanted to come back. I couldn't wait for the opportunity to leave on my own terms, not strapped to a stretcher or on a medevac airplane."

Our trip was known as “Operation Proper Exit 9” because this was the ninth time that the Troops First Foundation had enabled wounded veterans to have the opportunity to know what it feels like to leave "theater" under their own power. During the entire week we were treated as distinguished guests, including being assigned a personal security detail (PSD) to go with us everywhere and help keep us safe. Our trip took us on hours of helicopter tours over the areas where each of us was injured, and to military bases where some of us had been stationed. One universal element we all shared was Balad Air Force Base Hospital, where each of us, differing in ages and injuries, was treated or stabilized. We got the chance to talk with all of the ER staff there and thank them for taking such good care of us, as well as others that we know back in the "states."

We also saw new technologies that help to keep our current troops safer, such as a revolutionary MRAP vehicle, which is used to detect IEDs, as well as for patrolling. It is unbelievably heavy and has a V-shaped bottom to direct blasts away from the vehicle; we were told it helps improve a soldier’s chances of surviving a bomb or IED blast by around 75 percent, which are great odds. Likewise, we were shown a C-RAM system, which detects incoming rounds, projects their point of impact and, if safe, will use a "mini-gun" to shoot the rounds out of the sky.

It was amazing to observe the differences from when we were there to how it is now. The Army did a great job of demonstrating to us how our injuries and time “in country” helped to contribute to a safer Iraq. For the first time in 65 years, people there are now able to protest concern over the operations of the military, the government and the infrastructure. They have never had that chance and we helped give it to them. We met a lot of great commanders and sergeant majors, all of whom conveyed just how much they appreciated our deployments, our sacrifices and that of our families.

Perhaps most importantly, our group had the chance to revisit the places where each of us got hurt, or "hit," which helped to leave some of those painful feelings behind. Our base still received incoming mortar rounds almost daily. Although the detection systems they have in place are much better, a mortar round doesn't discriminate who it hits or where.

I left Iraq thankful for the opportunity to walk onto the plane that carried us safely back to the blessed United States. On the flight from Kuwait, our group was talking to the plane’s captain, a reserve helicopter pilot who had done multiple tours in Afghanistan and was due back within months. He was the first person to notify us about the death of Osama Bin Laden, who was responsible for turning our country inside out, killing many innocent civilians and really starting the global War on Terror. It was great news on which to end a great trip. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I'm very glad I went. I now know what it feels like have a "proper exit" and I'm forever grateful. Houston Rodeo Revisited

Yet again my hat is off to the Houston Rodeo! Before the three-week-long event ended on March 20, I was invited back a second time, along with other wounded warriors, for the “swine auction,” which was preceded by one of the best breakfasts I've ever had: eggs, bacon and sausage, of course, along with pancakes, pastries and even cake!

Once we were fed, the event started much the same as a Major League Baseball game, with a presentation of the colors and the singing of the national anthem. Then all of the military veterans on hand were called up on stage, including two each from the Army, Navy and Coast Guard, as well as three from the Air Force and the Marines, of which I was one. The cheering crowd welcomed us in a way that Texans are pretty amazing at. Again, thanks to the Houston Rodeo for setting such an awesome example

Houston Rodeo Parade Honors Veterans

I recently wore my dress blues for the first time in awhile. I used to wear them only for special events, and now that I'm retired the same holds true, but the occasion on March 1 was, indeed, special. I was invited as a wounded soldier to be in the Grand Entry Parade at the opening of the 79th annual Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show. Altogether, there were about a dozen veterans who participated, including a group of eight or nine other wounded heroes from the San Antonio Military Medical Center.

The event started, in true Texas tradition, with Texas barbecue and Coca-Cola. Because that day was designated by the rodeo as Armed Forces Appreciation Day, we were surrounded by some 1,300 soldiers and their families from Ft. Hood, Texas, and it felt like being back on a base again to see all that camouflage! I learned that the rodeo, which is a very big deal here in Houston, doesn't get under way without the parade, and having now experienced it, I’d have to say I agree. All of the wounded troops were loaded into horse-drawn wagons and off we went.

It took a lot of logistics to get everyone in the wagons and to store the wheelchairs, but once the horses began, there was no stopping them. We first paraded through lots of horse ranchers and exhibitors where there were more salutes than I could've counted! As we prepared to make our way into Reliant Stadium, where the rodeo itself takes place, we all heard the announcers mentioning that a very special group of wounded warriors was about to join them, and in we came. All the applause and cheering, mixed with the shouts of “thank you,” were amazing to hear. The wounded troops were featured on the stadium’s big screen, waving to the crowd and really soaking up the huge show of appreciation that was taking place.

I had never been to the rodeo before, but after seeing the outpouring of support from Texans, I'll certainly be there again next year with the family in tow. I can only hope to be part of the crowd of raving fans as a caravan of veterans and wounded warriors are brought through because it was pretty obvious the rodeo had permission to begin once that occurred. It was a great experience and I hope other families get to enjoy this amazing spectacle. My special thanks to the Armed Forces Appreciation Committee for allowing the heroes to be so proudly supported on that day.

The Trials of Dogsledding

Imagine being told that you would never be able to dance at your daughter’s wedding, or do certain activities that you once pursued passionately. Would you accept defeat or would you strive to adapt – to prove to doctors, your family, the world, but most importantly, to yourself, that you are not disabled, but still the strong-minded, determined and inspired individual who served your country so proudly?

This was essentially the challenge facing me and two other northern Michigan veterans wounded in the Mideast wars as we recently put our bodies to the test during two days of dogsledding. Joe Tormala, Nick Hurst and I had grown up riding either ATVs or snowmobiles through the state’s vast network of trails, but none of us had ever tried this activity. While most people may think that dogsledding is just riding on a sled behind the dogs, we quickly learned that is not the case.

Upon arriving at the trail head in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the three of us were met by our guides and a brisk temperature of minus- 16 degrees that eventually warmed to the mid 20’s. Before assigning us our dogs, our guides gave us a brief instruction on how to hook up our teams, after which they remarked on how quickly we “rookies” took to such tasks, as if we had been doing them for years. Once the dogs were set and gear loaded on our respective sleds, we then took off on our overnight camping trip, which was to cover about 15-18 miles the first day.

While the dogs did most of the work, we soon realized that this was not just a “ride and enjoy” session as we had to help the sled uphill by either running next to it or pushing it along with one foot. We also had to steer the sled, making sure the dogs took the correct path by shouting “HA” for left and “GEE” for right, and were constantly using the brake system to keep the dogs from running into the other sleds. By the end of that first day, the dogs were not the only ones tired as we shared dinner and a few laughs before spending the night at the winter encampment.

Morning broke with more than a few groans about sore and tired muscles, but everyone’s upbeat, can-do attitudes prevailed as we prepared for the run back to the kennels. Deciding on a shorter route of only 10-12 miles for the return trip, we were soon enjoying the serenity that comes from being behind a dog team. When you can ride through the wilderness and the only sound you hear is the barking of the dogs or your own voice shouting encouragement to them, it makes for a peaceful and enjoyable day.

After our return, with the dogs put away, we said our good-byes and drove to our respective homes, each filled with a new respect for the sport of dogsledding.

Life Lessons Learned from Coastal Dance Rage

Recently I went to St. Louis so my daughter could participate in a dance workshop that was part of the international Coastal Dance Rage tour. As I sat there watching 400+ little dancers, I couldn't help but think of how to apply this to life. I found that hour after hour, these kids gave their all. As the expression goes, they “danced like no one was watching." I was inspired by their determination to learn and grow in something that they love so much. They pushed through the physical/mental stress it takes to keep up with professional instructors. They gave everything they could to become better.

I want you to think hard for a second about what in your life has inspired you, or what is your passion. I want you to think about what you would do to become better. Since I was injured in Iraq, I get asked a lot, "How do you do it? How do you push on?" Well, these kids showed me that if you want something bad enough, you find a way to dance the dance. Whether your life is a waltz, a lyrical, or a hip hop jam, dance like no one is looking.

Preparing for my "Life Day" anniversary

As I get ready to mark the seventh anniversary of my injury – or as I like to call it, my “life day” – I have begun paying attention to certain things that I’ve found harder to do now than earlier on in my recovery. For instance, not using my calf muscles on a regular basis have made it difficult to build those back up, just as not laboring on a roof or on scaffolding, as I used to do, have made it hard to build up other core muscles. In short, not having any sort of physical fitness regimen, has made it hard to get motivated to stay in shape.

However, thinking about all this has gotten me fired up. Like any injured veteran, I know I must work out and stay in shape, both for my own health, as well as my family's. I have been going to the YMCA for two months now, trying to get back that strength that I have lost. As a result, I have found a major improvement, not just in my strength, but also in my mood and energy. Do I like working out? Do I like being sweaty and smelly? The answer to both those questions would have to be “no,” but I know I must push past this.

As a service member, I always had my “battle buddy” to push me. Now, as a wounded vet, I have a nation to push me. Along with others in my position, I want to show everyone in our lives WE CAN be active. I have found many Americans are amazed at what we can do as we fight through our physical, mental and emotional scars, even though we consider them just part of everyday lives now.

I plan to use my stories and experience to help others, knowing it will brighten those dark days that all of us inevitably have sometimes. It will inspire them to be better people. It is truly a win/ win situation. Therefore, if you are also an injured veteran, I once again challenge you to improve your life and the lives around you. Let’s make a difference together.

Holiday Musings 2009 by BJ Jackson

In the hustle bustle of everyday life we are sometimes too busy to step back and look around us. The last few months of the year are a great time to do so. With all of the holiday cheer in the air people take time to reflect on what to be thankful for, whether it is being able to spend time with loved ones from near and far, or just the simple miracles of everyday life.

I often stop to think of the service members who are serving this great country in different parts of the world, however it seems they are in my thoughts a lot more when the Holidays roll around. How many 2-year old girls are missing their father or mother during this holiday season? How many 5 year old boys will get that present which reminds them of things they use to do with their deployed parent. When I sit and I think about things like this it brings tears to my eyes; I am truly thankful of their sacrifices as families. But, then I go into deeper thought about the many kids spending time with parents in the Military hospitals or rehabbing in VA’s all across America. When I think this, I truly start to weep, for I know what it is like to have a loving and supporting family with me at the hospital during the holidays and all that the Family gives up to be there. Again I am reminded of what I am thankful for: Freedom, Sacrifice and Family.

This holiday season is coming fast and no matter what your religious beliefs are, I would ask you to reflect on what you are thankful for and make room in your hearts and in your prayers for our Nation’s Heroes. It is the support from great people like you that makes serving and sacrificing for this great country all the more worth it. So thank you ALL and have a Great Holiday season!

P.S. I am looking forward to the Road to Recovery Concert & Tribute at BAMC, put on by our good friend Gary Sinise and the Lt Dan Band. Just one more way that CSAH is giving back to our Wounded Heroes and their families this Holiday season.

TAMCO 2009 Grand Slam Charity Tournament

In looking at the month of April, I realized I was on the road 23 days this month. Now, that is a LOT of time away from my family, but when I get to come to events like the 2009 Grand Slam Charity Tournament in Tampa, put on by the great people of TAMCO Foundation on April 16th and 17th, and I get to see the patriotism of so many great Americans, it makes life on the road easier. The Tampa VA Hospital brings out some of our wounded heroes to fish in this great charity tournament.

Now some of you are probably thinking, “BJ is fishing and not golfing. What's up?” Well, I have to tell you, Jack Thompson, a true Hero to us and his TAMCO Foundation team of volunteers “do it right”. General Chip Diehl, along with fellow wounded heroes Gary Boggs, Pete Reid and his wife, Michele, and Laura Narvaez were able to attend, as well, to support the Grand Slam Fishing Tournament. They all say, "If you love to fish, this is the tournament for you."

62 boats fishing for Redfish, Snook, and Trout on Old Tampa Bay: a true fishing Grand Slam! Wounded Heroes and great stories; what more could you ask for?

Mr. Thompson, from my family (Wounded Heroes) to yours (fishing people and volunteers), thank you!!! I challenge anyone who reads this to think of ways to support this event. Better yet, start one of your own. Go to their website www.tamcofoundation.org to learn more about this annual event. This is just one example of a great American using his resources to assist our wounded.

Lt. Dan Band Benefit Concert

As soldiers we have all had missions and assignments, as injured vets we now get through our days with dreams and goals; goals as small as being able to speak straight or dress ourselves in the morning or dreams as broad as touching someone’s heart with our art.

After being hurt in Iraq, the full injury for me was not completely understandable, and my goals of pursuing a similar civilian career were crushed. I’ve spent two years dealing with my injuries and trying to find a “thing” to keep me going.

When I was in Iraq I was able to take a few pictures that spoke so much to me after.

I knew that that is what I had to keep doing.

I cannot read or write without human or technical help, so I dream to make a coffee table book full of photos that will speak to people in a way only I can now fully communicate. Through Art.

Shane Parson’s and I, along with our mom’s went to Chicago for an amazing surprise of a lifetime! We met Gary Sinise, one of the most humble kind men I’ve ever met, and Mr. Kimo Williams, one of our fellow brothers of arms.

Kimo met Shane at last years Road to recovery conference and they really bonded over music and art. Kimo then came up with an idea to give Shane a guitar to help pursue his dream, and to give myself a camera to be able to pursue my dreams.

We were all honored guests at the Lt Dan Band concert in Chicago, pulled up on stage and given our gifts. I cannot say how much this means to me and I know to Shane.

I hope to be able to create a moving photo music video to Shane’s music and share it with everyone.

Thank you Kimo, Gary and the Coalition for doing this. I know we are the first receiving gifts of the arts for this program and I know we are not the last, but it’s a gift of hope and love and expression we will cherish every day!

April Fools?

Today is a great day to be alive. It is April 1, 2009, which means it is also a great day to play jokes on loved ones. For me six years ago today represents the first day of the rest of my life. It was a cold, icy snow filled day in Wisconsin when the 186 MP’s were told to load into buses to head to the airstrip. We were all on the buses and ready to head out when our First Sergeant climbed aboard and told us “ground your gear. We’re not leaving today -- the runway is too icy”. The MP’s didn’t like this April fool’s joke. We shuffled back out of the cramped buses and went back into the barracks.

Now if my memory serves me right, on April 3 we made it all the way to the airfield but when we got there they sent us back -- the runway was still too icy. The next day we got inside the hanger before being turned away again. All I kept thinking was these April fool’s jokes aren’t that funny. On April 5, 2003, when we got to the airstrip I was selected to be on the detail to load the plane with all of our gear. As we were loading the gear, we joked that we were going to load the gear onto the plane and then board the plane just to be told the runway is too icy and then de-board the plane and move back to buses.

Luckily the joke was over and we were able to load up and start our long journey to Iraq. Our first stop was New York then on to Rome and then Kuwait. After 18+ hours and two or three sunrises later we were in the Middle East where we had joked we would never get to. Now some might think be asking, “Why would you joke about being able to go to Iraq?”

I have learned a lot about life in my 27 years but the most important lesson I have learned is if you can’t smile and joke and look at the brighter side of things, then you have lost already. I have learned that there is always someone that loves you and cares about you even in the darkest moments -- this is what makes them your friend. Use that friendship to help each other. Remember, no one is alone in anything they are going through: others may be going through the same thing or something worse.

I was 22 when I was injured and in the best shape of my life. I was as independent as anyone is in the military. On August 7, 2003, I learned what the word “friend” really means. A friend may be someone you have known for 20 years or it may be a stranger. The greatest challenge we face is to be a friend to one another – a challenge I hope you will all take.

Lots of fun for wounded troops at BAMC

The Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), in San Antonio, TX, is the No. 1 care center for burn patients and will soon be the No. 1 care center for amputees and traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. It is to BAMC that most of the wounded troops from the War on Terror go to begin their road to recovery.

You can imagine how hard it is for wounded troops and family members to go through the process of recovery: changing bandages, cleaning wounds, the needles, therapy and, most importantly, getting used to a new life style.

That is why the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes is very involved in not only providing financial assistance but in bringing some fun activities to the service members and their families, such as hunting trips, concerts, football, basketball, hockey, and baseball games, as well as fishing trips. For example, we have lots planned for service members and their families this March. In San Antonio, we are taking 20 troops to a WWE event at the AT&T center and we are hosting a gala event for more than 50 troops. In Houston, four troops are going fishing and later on there will be a skydiving jump, where one of our spokespeople will be jumping from more than 10,000 feet up in the air!

These are just a couple events that CSAH has scheduled. We hold many events all year across the nation but the ones where the wounded troops and families are involved are the most rewarding for us.

We provide these activities to be fun, to help the wounded troops and their families relax and to let them forget, for a little while, the hard times at the hospital.

Suicide is Not the Answer: Let Your Friends and Family Help

Today was a good day. The sun was out; the air was warm -- much needed in a long and cold winter here in Iowa. The streets were flooded with families taking walks, dogs barking and kids playing. Today was a good day. I wish I could say they’re all good but once you encounter something evil in the midst of doing something good, that evil sticks with you. Lurking in the shadows, waiting to rear its ugly head at a moment when you aren’t at your strongest.

For me, that evil was shown to me on the night of Oct. 12, 2004, and it changed my life forever. I still think about it: I remember the screaming, the gunshots, and the vision of what happened still as fresh as if it were yesterday and the white hot of the bullet tearing through my skin, not knowing what the ultimate outcome would be. I blacked out and in the time before I came to, I decided that I was going to fight, I would not give in to the damage done to my body but instead I’d learn from it, grow from it and make it a goodness that I can use and pass on to others.

My experience has charted a new course for my family and my life and I hope that others can learn to do the same. My heart breaks when I hear on the news that another veteran has chosen to end his own life rather than annihilate the evil within. In today’s times, a person who joins the fraternity known as the United States military becomes a part of the strongest family and network of friends on the face of the earth. Let us use that, and help one another. The anguish that suicide brings to a veteran’s entire family is shattering and I believe whole heartedly, it could be prevented and that person could use those experiences to learn and to grow from.

If you are a soldier and have faced this evil, look around and please know that I want to help you, your family wants to help you and the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes wants to help you. There is so much good in life, you have to give yourself the opportunity to share in its experiences. Sometimes the road you have to walk is going to seem very dark and at times you may seem like you’re alone but know this -- you’re not. We all swore an oath to protect this country from all enemies, foreign and domestic, and the evil that you may be facing has become a domestic enemy. Please allow yourself, in your time of need, to be protected. Let us help you. Let your friends and your family help you. Together we can chart a new course for your life and the life of your family. Trust in those around you and give yourself a chance to be helped There are a million better options than ending your life, the life of a hero. All you have to do is try.

As I lay down at night I’m thankful for the day just passed and the day to come. Every day is a new day and may I never forget that I got a second chance. Thanksgiving is a day for all to remember what they have and have had and to realize how fortunate they are to have it. It is a time for all to come together and share their stories and laughter. To me it is one of the most important holidays. For me it is a time to eat till your stomach cries for no more, it is a time to reach out to others less fortunate, it is a time to shed all worries from your body, it is a time to clear the slate and finish the year with a smile.

At the end of the year comes joy, in more forms than one. The Road to Recovery Conference is something that brings hundreds of broken down, worn out, tired, and terrified hearts together to heal. It is something some wait all year for; just to feel a little peace of mind, a time for their families to let loose, and shake a little stress off. A time for injured soldiers to share with others that understand. An enjoyment for the kids, and a break for the wives.

The #20 Coalition to Salute America's Heroes Chevy Camaro, piloted by our talented driver Mark Mathias, was excited to begin the 2008 racing season at Thunderhill Raceway, Kyle, Texas, on April 12, 2008. The day started as a beautiful 70 degree day with clear skies, and became much cooler and windy, dropping to 50 degrees at race time.

The #20 began the 8-lap qualifying heat race starting in the #2 outside pole position on this vaunted 3/8 mile, D-shaped flat oval asphalt track. However, tire issues quickly placed Mark in the #6 position, battling an extremely tight race car the entire heat race. On Lap 6, while battling back for 5th place with the #51 car, we got into a racing altercation, causing damage to the right front of the race car. The #20 ultimately placed 6th in the 10-car field for the heat race.

In preparation for the feature race, we repaired the damage to the right front corner of the race car, made some wedge and air pressure adjustments, and prepared to battle the 20-car field in the main event.

The # 20 started the event in 4th position, and maintained his position for the first 25 laps of this 40-lap event, as the front 4 cars separated themselves from the rest of the field, with the 99 and 28 cars leading the way at a blistering pace. On lap 33, however, mechanical problems affected the 99, bringing him off the pace of the 3 following cars. On lap 34, Mark piloted the #20 into the 3rd position, despite the car becoming looser as the race grew to a close. Expertly guiding the car through lapped traffic, we finished the A-Line Super Stock 40-lap feature race in the 3rd position.

Westover Motorsports was proud to host Mike and Marie Greenstone, along with their daughter Gisella, to the evening’s event, as part of our ongoing partnership with the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes. The Coalition supports our veterans who have been wounded in the Iraqi (OIF) and Afghanistan (OEF) conflicts. The whole family was entertained and thoroughly enjoyed the racing experience, giving them a break from the everyday grind of recovery. Many thanks to the staff of Thunder Hill Raceway for assisting us in this endeavor!

LaChance Golf Tournament

I just got home from the John La Chance Memorial "heroes" Golf Tournament. This was a amazingly organized golf tournament in King George VA. The LaChance family did a remarkable job. The spirit and energy of those who attend was amazing. I was lucky enough to get on the son and son-in-law's team. Although we didn't win, we had a lot of good laughs (mostly about my golf game.) I had a great time.

It was a great tournament to honor John and his years of service to our great nation and his life as a father, husband and a friend. CSAH is proud to be selected as the friends of the LaChance family.

I would like to once again thank all who attend and most importantly I would like to thank Pat LaChance and her team for her hard work in making the day a huge success.

Battlemind

A new program called has been created to help troops prepare for PTSD before they are deployed. "Battlemind" training hopes to aid soldiers and families by preparing them before they leave for war about issues they may endure, as well as problems upon return home after deployment.

The People of Bondurant Rock!

Now that I am completely rested from the craziness of this weekend, I wanted to share the good news with all of you. The good people of Bondurant, IA raised nearly $7,000 for the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes on Friday night! We had a great support from the local media, too, as all four TV stations came out to cover the event. Watch stories from WOI (click on the link "banding together" and WHO.

Thank you to all of you who contributed and volunteered. I've found my calling helping folks around the country help my fellow brothers and sisters in arms, so I have issued a challenge to our spokespeople to organize similar events in their hometowns. Doggone Awesome

When we go to war, so do they. In every war in American history, dogs have been by our sides helping us to find the enemy and keep us safe.

Now they are also helping to heal our wounds.

A recent story in USA Today revealed that the two "specially selected and trained therapy dogs will be attached to combat stress units in Tikrit and Mosul, where 'they'll be a vital part of the medical team' that helps troops struggling with stress, sleep disorders and event-related stress." Dogs are also being used to help our newly wounded troops through rehabilitation. Shane Parsons, a wounded soldier who recently received a new house courtesy of CSAH, has a very special bond with Gracie, a mixed breed therapy dog, who visits him often as he recovers at Brooke Army Medical Center.

And ... in this heartwarming case, man is dog's best friend. Nubs is an Iraqi dog who was severely injured and saved by one very special Marine. If you love dogs, you must read this story here !

This is just a great example of how one conversation can spark an entire community to take action. I had a conversation with my chiropractor one day about my involvement with the Coalition. She told me that she knew some people in the area who might want to raise some money. Now, here we are a few months later and one of the largest fundraising events for area veterans is just around the corner.

This Friday, in partnership with the Bondurant Chamber of Commerce, we are holding a dinner and auction to help local veterans.

Thanks to everyone who is helping to put this together ... it's gonna be a great event! More to come next week.

Reid Home Update #1

So I have decided to keep you all updated with progress on the Reids' home remodeling. This remodeling is one of the more recent projects in our Homes for Wounded Heroes program and it's really close to my heart.

Let me tell you why this case is especially interesting...

Pete was critically injured in a mortar attack that claimed the lives of five men in Iraq in 2004. (You can read the full story here.) Pete was injured so severely that he was given only a 1% chance of living. But he is here today. Talk about a miracle. Pete gets around in a wheel chair but it has been pretty difficult for him to get the wheel chair around his house. So he and his wife Michele hired a local contractor to make renovations to their Florida home. Those renovations included an expanded bathroom and doorways and even a device to help Pete, who can no longer swim, go for a dip in their backyard pool. The contractor started the job more than a year ago and took their money ... then he disappeared.

So that is when the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes stepped in. We found an incredible construction team - Done Right Contracting - in Florida to go in and finish the renovations. Thank you, thank you, thank you Done Right for doing right by our injured vets!

The project began on 1/14 and Done Right is keeping us posted by sending photos of their weekly progress. Now I'm sharing them with you:

MA Vets: Funding to Increase for PTSD Counseling

The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes understands that not all scars from the war are visible to the eye. There is an estimated 300,000 troops from OEF/OIF that suffer from PTSD and TBI so these are becoming the signature injuries from these wars today.

That's why we are saluting the state of Massachusetts today. They have announced a promise to its veterans to increase financial aid for those suffering from PTSD and other emotional effects from combat. If you live in MA or want more information, we ask you to read this article from Military.com.

A state representative says that "Massachusetts has become a leader in providing support for veterans, who are seven times more likely to commit suicide than the general population, according to the Public Health Department."

The Post 9/11 GI Bill

During WWII, the well-known GI Bill was established as way for the government to say "thanks" to the members of the Armed Forces for their services. Since its inception, it has helped millions go to college, who might not otherwise have had the opportunity.

Although times have changed tremendously over the last 60 years, the Bill has changed very little.

Military.com has published this article that details new proposed revisions to the Bill. According to the article:

"Senator Webb of Virginia has teamed up with more than 30 other senators and veterans' advocacy groups to draft the "Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act." Their upgraded G.I. Bill would provide full tuition, room and board for veterans of the active duty military as long as they'd served after Sept. 11, 2001.

The bill would go further, however, by providing a $1,000 cash stipend, up to $1,200 annually for tutoring assistance, and it would pay for any testing fees for licensing after graduation."

Vets to See Mileage Reimbursement Increase

Some good news from the VA for wounded troops today … they announced that "Over a million eligible veterans will see their mileage reimbursement more than double for travel to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities ... the 2008 appropriations act provided funding for VA to increase the beneficiary travel mileage reimbursement rate from 11 cents per mile to 28.5 cents per mile. Rehabilitation does not end when we are sent home from the hospitals. Many of us are in rehab for years and live miles away from VA facilities. This new funding will really ease the financial strain for many of us living in rural areas.

Hopefully many more of our families will take advantage of this new funding. We will keep you posted on any more developments.

LeAnn Rimes Donates 10 Tickets and VIP Passes for Iowa Concert

Hello all,

I just wanted to let you all know how incredible LeAnn Rimes is! She gave CSAH 10 tickets and 10 VIP passes to meet with her before and after her show this Friday, January 25 in Tama, Iowa. She even invited us to listen to her sound check as she gets ready for the show! Fellow wounded veteran B.J. Jackson and his wife Abby are going to go with me and my wife Sarah.

We're also bringing with us a recently wounded soldier's wife as well as a Marine that lost his foot in Iraq, and some other local troops.

LeAnn is such a special woman, she has dedicated so much of her time to helping out CSAH and supporting the troops. Last October, B.J. Jackson and I got to fly to New York City to present her with REDBOOK Magazines Strength and Spirit Award at the Hearst Tower for her dedication to our wounded troops. We were very honored, and I am very honored to be able to attend her show this Friday, and even more excited to take some of my fellow brothers and sisters in arms to meet LeAnn!

So at 8:00 pm this Friday, I hope you all will be thinking of us and how lucky we are to have the support of amazing people like LeAnn - the songstress of the troops.

A Present Too Big to Wrap

I wanted to share some heartwarming news with you all. Below is the story of how CSAH help give the Ewell family a very merry Christmas...

CSAH first met the Gordy and Terra Ewell at the 2007 Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute in Orlando, Florida at the beginning of December. Gordy's Operation Iraqi Freedom tour extended beyond 1 year; he survived several multiple blast exposures from March of 2006 to October of 2006 which resulted in vision loss, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and hearing loss. An initial blast blew out an impacted wisdom tooth from vocal plate, fractured all the teeth in front, and his left mandible was shattered. He also suffered a broken neck and currently suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

When we first met Gordy at the Conference, we also met his wife Terra and their six children, ranging from toddlers to teens. Since returning home from Iraq with new disabilities, Gordy and Terra have been struggling to maintain their home and family life. It is hard for Gordy to be the same dad that he was when he left. By sharing their inspiring story at the conference, they touched and moved us all.

When an opportunity came up to nominate a veteran and their family for the Montel Williams Christmas Special we were sure to recommend Gordy and Terra because we knew that they would be the perfect fit for a Christmas show dedicated to our troops. When Terra heard the news she said with a selfless courage, "But isn't there anyone who needs this more than we do?"

On the show, Gordy, Terra, and their six children received over $40,000 worth of gifts and cash including a new Hynudai Santa Fe SUV (complete with big red bow and the taxes paid), grocery gift card, and electronics. Their two oldest daughters, Shelby (17) and Jaime (15) are remarkable young women who, in light of their father's injuries, have taken on more responsibility than most teenagers could imagine. Because of their hard work, Montel rewarded them specifically with spa packages, affording them a break from their everyday responsibilities.

Gordy, like many others who serve our country, has made an insurmountable sacrifice to serve our nation. Montel said it best - "the greatest gift that anyone of us have in this country is our freedom." We are proud to give back to Gordy and his supportive family for all that they have given to us.

2007 was amazing for us, as an organization we have grown and passed many milestones. We have now helped over 5,000 severely wounded troops from the War on Terror!

Our Road to Recovery was a huge success last year, and we look forward to begin planning on the 2008 Conference and Tribute.

Hello everyone!

Donny Daughenbaugh here, just wanted to let everyone know that I am headed to the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl on New Years Day!!

We are so excited, and very honored that Konica Minolta donated 25 tickets to the Coalition, which enabled CSAH to invite 10 wounded troops and their families to attend the game.

There is no where else I want to be on New Years Day but in a stadium watching football.

I would like to say thank you to Konica Minolta for being so generous as to donate the tickets, and also to CSAH for making it possible that myself and the other troops attend the game.

I will update you all later on the fun times that I know we will have at the game!

CSAH Welcomes Parsons Family Home for Christmas

Wow! What exciting news we have to share with everyone!

Last year, Cindy Parsons received the phone call that no mother wants to get when she learned that her only child, U.S. Army Corporal Shane Parsons, had been severely injured during combat in Ramadi, Iraq.

Shane lost both of his legs and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. After Shane was sent back to the United States for medical treatment, Cindy immediately flew from their home in Fostoria, Ohio, to be by her son's side - and there she has faithfully remained ever since.

Cindy is a single mother, and no one was there to check in on the home while she was away. During that time, an undetected water leak spread black mold throughout the house. The deadly mold crept into every room and the insurance company declared the house - and every bit of its contents - condemned. Their home and belongings were leveled to the ground.

On November 15, 2007, Dan Vargas, Director of the Family Support Network for CSAH, met Cindy and Shane at the Intrepid Center. Cindy and Shane thought they were there to meet Big Kenny, one half of the famous country duo, Big and Rich. Vargas and Big Kenny pulled them aside. They asked about Shane's injury and the situation with their house.

Big Kenny said to Cindy, "The great thing about this month is it is about giving. And the greatest thing about America, is that the American people love to give. Because of their generous donations to the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes, you are getting a new home."

Vargas says that upon hearing those words, "you could literally see the stress lifted off Cindy's shoulders" as she started to cry. So moved by this, Big Kenny opened up his personal checkbook and wrote a check right then and there to Cindy in the amount of $10,000 to buy new furniture for their home.

CSAH paid $130,000 to Lakewood Homes for construction of a brand new home so that Cindy would be mortgage free, and CSAH honored the Parsons family with their new home on December 23rd!! We are so excited and honored to be able to share this information with everyone now.

42nd and Nelson partner with CSAH for 2008 theme song, "That's All I'm Asking For"

Long Island Songwriter / Musicians Steve Farella & Pete Colombo craft a message of unity for the United States; "That's All I'm Asking For".

Manager / Producer Howie Harnick teams up Steve (Guitars), and Pete (Vocals) with famed Nashville Producer / Engineer Ed Seay, and 5 of the best session players on the planet; Pat Buchanan (Guitars), Tim Akers (Keys), Biff Watson (Acoustic Guitars), Paul Leim (Drums / Percussion), and Alison Prestwood (Bass), on September 14, 2007 at Starstruck Studios in Nashville to record an "Anthem of Unity For America". While in Nashville the guys recorded their second single, "We're Gonna Be Alright."

Their union was completed by partnering with The Coalition To Salute America's Heroes, an organization that supports severely wounded veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Steve and Pete, performing as 42nd & Nelson, officially launched "That's All I'm Asking For" as the Coalition's theme song on December 4, 2007 in Orlando. The performance will be part of the Coalition's 2007 Road to Recovery Convention. The guys will be backed up by Leann Rimes' tour band led by Tim Akers.

50% of the net proceeds from the sale of these songs and associated merchandise will be donated to The Coalition To Salute America's Heroes.

Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute featured in opinion column

A guest who was staying at the Walt Disney Dolphin Resort at the same time we were there for the conference, wrote about his experience with our wounded heroes in an opinion column in the St. Cloud Times in Minnesota.

"Until this trip, these folks were just news stories to me and I had no real understanding of the immensity of their sacrifices. Talking to the service members and watching their Stoicism and the support of their young families tore my heart out and I cannot talk about it without tearing up," said John Anderson.

Hal Jay and Mark Davis of WBAP-AM broadcasted live yesterday for Hal's Angels in front of the WBAP Studios in Dallas. Listeners stopped by and made donations to the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes and met soldier Jason Wimmert of the Coalition. Jason and the Coalition presented Hal and Mark with a very special American flag that had flown in Iraq.

Well, we have been so busy since we have returned from Orlando that we haven't had a chance to update you all on the amazing things that happened at our Fourth Annual Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute! It was a great six days, and we met so many inspirational men and women who made our experiences so much better.

We wanted to update you on all of the great things that happened in Orlando, and hope that you all will stay tuned for next year!

The Adventure Sports Expo

A big THANK YOU goes out to GNC, the sponsor of the Expo, and Mark Wellman and his entire team for putting on such an exciting expo for us all! The rock climbing wall, hand cycles, and ski ramp were so much fun. The ski ramp was especially great to see heroes skiing who may have thought they would never walk again. It was truly inspiring, and one of our favorite aspects to the conference.

Camp C.O.P.E.

At our 2006 Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute, Camp C.O.P.E. debuted for the first time, and now this one-of-a-kind therapeutic day camp for kids is in it's second year and it has been more successful than ever! Not only was the camp featured on CBS Evening News, but the children in attendance all said they loved the experience!

$500 Holiday Gift Checks

All of our heroes in attendance were surprised on Friday night when we presented them each with a $500 gift check courtesy of our sponsor, NAPE. The gift checks were meant to show our appreciation to our troops, and to also help them afford Christmas presents that they might not be able to afford otherwise.

Amazing stories!

Not only was this event a one-stop shop of information from the Department of Defense, Veterans Affairs, and various employers at the career fair such as the CIA, the Secret Service, Northrop Grunman and T-Mobile, but this gathering was also a time for emotional and mental healing from the invisible scars of war.

We were all surprised when in our general session, injured veteran Rory Dunn reunited with the medic who saved his life in Iraq, Tim Bredberg! There wasn't a dry eye in the house after they told their story, and Tim shared that he thought Rory had been dead for the past three years. These encounters are what make all of our hard work in putting together this event, worthwhile.

Well it is finally Friday, and most of us are back and settled into our home towns after a very exciting Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute in Orlando, FL! The event ended on Tuesday and all the troops and their families flew out on Wednesday. We had such a great time, but more on that later...

While we were in Orlando, Camp C.O.P.E. got paid a visit by CBS Evening News!! The show is set to air on tonights news, so tune in to your local programming!

Camp C.O.P.E. is a therapeutic, hands-on day camp for children whose parents have been severely wounded in the War on Terror. Camp C.O.P.E. was first rolled out at last years Road to Recovery Conference and made its second appearance last week in Orlando.

The program is scheduled to be released on a national scale sometime in 2008.

Camp C.O.P.E. was featured in the Orlando Sentinel.

Well it is finally that time of year again for the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes Fourth Annual Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute at the Walt Disney World Dolphin and Swan Resort in Orlando, FL. We all arrived yesterday and have been really busy getting ready for the 150 troops and their families to arrive tomorrow.

We are thrilled about this years event because it is going to be the largest event we have held yet, with more families than we have ever hosted before. This year, we are also very lucky to have a special guest with us, Acting Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Gordon Mansfield! Mr. Mansfield will be speaking on Sunday at our general session. We are honored to have such an esteemed member of our government speaking with our troops and their families.

Also, be sure to check out the Sean Hannity radio show later on this afternoon, J.R. will be speaking about the conference to Sean today.

Well it is time for me to get back to work, we have to have everything ready to go for our families to get here tomorrow! Check out the pictures from last years event here. More updates to come.

We were looking through some older photos today and wanted to share some with you that we thought were pretty funny!

Here are two of our National Spokespeople, B.J. Jackson (left) and J.R. Martinez (right) on a 1500-mile bike ride in early October in Southern California. They were riding to raise funds and awareness for other wounded veterans with Operation American Spirit, a nonprofit organization founded by Emmy nominated actor Jack Scalia. J.R. was really showing his American pride with his red, white and blue mohawk!!

J.R. just couldn't keep from goofing off throughout this two week bike ride. Check out his new hairdo!

CSAH Featured on the Montel Williams Show!

Well it has been a crazy few days for us! Yesterday we flew from our hometown of Indianapolis, IN to the Big Apple, New York City, for a chance to appear on the Montel Williams Show! We got a call late on Tuesday from Montel's producers asking us if we would be able to share our family's story and how we have overcome adversity on his show. Of course we accepted! So we flew in Wednesday afternoon and filmed the show on Thursday, and then flew back home after the show was done taping.
It was a whirlwind trip, but we were thrilled to be able to share our story of resilience with a national audience, and of course, we were thrilled to meet Montel!

When Jerry was injured, of course it was a very tough time for all of us. But since then we have gone on to be stronger than ever as a family unit, and we have been blessed with many things along the way. The Coalition to Salute America's Heroes has been very instrumental is helping us through the hard times, and we always want to send a word of thanks their way! We would also like to thank Montel and his crew for allowing us to share our story, and share the Coalition's message on his show. We will let you all know as soon as possible when the show is going to air!

Now I guess it is time to get back to real life....

Wounded Troops and Their Families Attend Hannah Montana Concert in Texas

This past week, ten wounded troops and their families had the opportunity through the CSAH Family Support Network to attend the Hannah Montana concert in Texas, and some even got to meet Miley Cyrus herself! It was a very special event for the children who love the Hannah Montana Show.

The Family Support Network offers a lot of different activities to help aid the wounded troops and their families during the long road to recovery. Sometimes it might just be taking families of wounded veterans to sporting events or concerts such as this one, and other times it might just be getting a wounded troop out of the hospital for the afternoon to enjoy some much needed fresh air.

The Family Support Network also provides laptops free of charge to wounded troops who are in the hospital and need some way to keep in touch with their families back home. The network also offers special counseling to wounded troops who need to share their stories with people who have "been there" through 'Hero Coach Counseling.'

Camp C.O.P.E. is another part of the network, that offers a therapeutic hands on day camp for the children of wounded veterans.

CSAH Presents Cross Canadian Ragweed at Randolph Air Force Base Tonight

With Veterans Day right around the corner, there are events planned across the country to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces. Tonight, the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes is presenting the popular band, Cross Canadian Ragweed, at Randolph Air Force Base. This concert is expected to draw between 10,000 and 30,000 and is free to all DoD ID holders.

The event will be held on the flight line tonight, November 2, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

In addition to the concert, there will be exciting aerobatics, children’s inflatables and fireworks, and the entire event is free to all Department of Defense ID holders.

The show will begin with an air show courtesy of the US Army Golden Knights, Randy Ball versus the Air Force Jet car, Dan Buchanan with his air glider, and a T6 aeroshell.

Cross Canadian Ragweed will perform after the air show, with their eclectic country rock sound. The band is performing on behalf of CSAH.

If you are in the area, please come out for fun, fireworks and great music!

Tonight, the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes has also planned a very special
surprise for one of our wounded troops. We can't tell you today what we've got up our sleeve, so check back in on Monday to find out!

REDBOOK's Strength and Spirit Awards

Last night, fellow spokesman Donny Daughenbaugh and I had the honor of presenting LeAnn Rimes with REDBOOK's 2007 Strength and Spirit Award at the Hearst Tower in New York City. LeAnn was honored for her work with charities, in particular, the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes.

LeAnn has been constant inspiration to the wounded troops we serve. A woman with her commitment, generosity and passion is so rare and we so blessed to call her our friend.
LeAnn, thank you for reminding millions of Americans that we can lift one another with a helping hand, or a voice in song. It was an honor to present her with the 2007 Strength and Spirit Award!

Furthermore, it was extremely special to so warmly greeted by the REDBOOK and Hearst staff. Thank you to everyone who helped put this incredible event together.

We just walked the red carpet with her ... man there were a lot of flashing lights! We felt like celebrities ourselves. Now we are on our way to give her this much-deserved award. More later....

"Covering the Wounded"

I was asked by my good friend, Ron Martz (former military reporter at the Atlanta Journal Constitution), on behalf of the The Association of Military Journalists (www.militaryreporters.org) , to represent my fellow injured OIF/OEF veterans on the panel called "Covering the Wounded" at their annual conference in Arlington, VA on October 12, 2007.

There I answered questions from the press on my perspective of how this subject has been treated by the media, what I think they are doing right and what I think they are doing wrong. I'll let the answers I gave there remain exclusive to those who attended, but I can tell you that the media has been my friend during my recovery. Since 2004, I have been the National Spokesman for the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes so I've had my fair share of interactions with the press. The press holds all the power with their pen and paper to tell the American public our story. Thanks to the journalists like the ones I met at this conference, the public is now more aware than ever of the battles our families when returning home severely wounded. Without these stories, too many Americans may forget that our freedom is not free.
